Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua, is a gorgeous tree, native to North America. It bears attractive, cork-like bark and maple-like leaves which take on glorious and long-lasting autumn colours. Despite growing to an eventual height of 25m, it responds well to pruning, and is therefore an excellent choice for small gardens.
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Burgundy' is a rare cultivar, which develops autumn colour much later in the year than other sweet gums, and retains its red, orange and yellow leaves for much longer, sometimes to Christmas.
For best results grow Liquidambar styraciflua 'Burgundy' in rich, damp soil in full sun.
